| Wachovia is looking to add products as part of its overhaul of credit-card unit
Wachovia Corp. is looking for innovative thinkers and fresh ideas as it expands its card and payments business. And the bank also wants to introduce new products from that business soon. This week, the company began interviewing candidates to lead its emerging payment services group. It's one three segments of the new consumer and small-business payments unit headed by Steve Boehm, who previously ran Wachovia's relaunched credit-card business. The others are card services and payment services. In weighing new products, Boehm is particularly interested in areas such as mobile payments, in which consumers would use phones or handheld devices to process payments. Other possibilities include products in the health-care arena and online peer-to-peer payments such as PayPal.

Amex offers short-term credit
Credit card issuers learned long ago that many small-business owners use their personal credit cards to fill gaps in cash flow. So why not come up with cards that are geared specifically for small businesses? Many have, and American Express Co. is among the latest to put out a new small-business card. Amex started taking applications this month for its Plum Card, which offers early payment discounts and an option to defer payments for up to two months with no interest, instead of the usual 30 days. Amex is promoting the pay-in-full card as an alternative to trade terms credit, which is a form of short-term credit negotiated between a small business and its suppliers. The card is "the first of its kind," said Raymond Joabar, a senior vice president at Amex's small-business division in New York City.

More people are freezing credit report
Spooked by the possibility of identity theft, increasing numbers of people are taking a radical approach to thwart criminals: They are putting their credit reports on permanent freeze. A frozen credit report prevents almost anyone from using your name to take out a loan or sign up for credit, such as a credit card, a bank account or cell phone service. That is because, with a freeze in place, potential new creditors can't get access to your credit record kept on file by the three main credit-reporting bureaus without your explicit permission. Michael Dana, a Dallas police detective, chose to freeze his credit reports after a Texas law took effect last month that made freezes available to all residents. Dana says he received several notices from financial institutions and the government saying that some of his personal information may have been compromised.
