Every School Every Thursday -- WDM/Clive & Waukee

The West Des Moines physical education staff held the 32nd annual Steve France Sixth-Grade Volleyball Tournament Nov. 2. All sixth-grade students in the district had the opportunity to participate. Each elementary school combined all sixth -rade homerooms and formed one boys' team and one girls' team. There were seven games for each division, allowing each school to compete against every elementary school. We awarded a sportsmanship trophy for a boys, and girls, team who demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the tournament. A traveling trophy was awarded to the first-place team in the boys' and girls' divisions and ribbons were also awarded to the top four teams for both divisions.

Sixth-grade students in Denny Barton's physical education classes have been fine-tuning their volleyball skills.

The business of Search

When GoTo.com introduced paid search engine advertising almost a decade ago, the idea of auctioning rank in keyword search results and attaching text advertisements was controversial. People felt search results should be pure, said Ellen Siminoff, president/CEO Efficient Frontier Inc. [Other] concerns were: Could you get enough relevant advertising with search? Is it clear[ly] advertising? Will [people] click?

The answer was yes to each of those questions.

GoTo.com went public, renamed itself Overture Services and was bought by Yahoo. MarketingSherpas Search Marketing Benchmark Guide 2007 reported paid search generated nearly $8 billion last year. EMarketer projects ad spend for paid search will surpass $10 billion in 2008. Yahoo and Google are preducted to pocket 90 percent of this years spend.

Bank shareholder opposes Virgin bid

Sir Richard Branson's bid to salvage beleaguered Northern Rock has been met with opposition from the lender's biggest shareholder.

A consortium led by Sir Richard's Virgin Group was named as preferred bidder to rescue the company, but hedge fund RAB Capital - owner of a 6.7% stake - said the proposals undervalued Northern Rock.

The Virgin consortium is planning to inject £1.3 billion of funds into the group in return for a controlling stake of at least 55%. Part of the cash will be raised through new shares being offered at 25p each, giving Northern Rock an implied value of about £225 million - a fraction of the group's £5.2 billion value seen in February.

RAB Capital chief executive Philip Richards said the events were a "step closer" to securing the business - but is pressing for a higher offer.

Ashford OKs stock buy-back, completes hotel sale

Ashford Hospitality Trust's board of directors has approved a $50 million stock buy-back program.

In addition, the Dallas-based real estate investment trust (NYSE:AHT) said Monday that it has completed the sale of the Residence Inn Kansas City in Kansas City, Mo., for $7 million and has a contract to sell the JW Marriott New Orleans in New Orleans, La., for $67.5 million.

On the stock repurchase, Ashford said it may purchase -- as market conditions warrant -- about 5.45 percent of the publicly traded common stock outstanding.

The REIT says it will use proceeds from its ongoing sale of nonstrategic properties to fund the share repurchase program. Since Sept. 30, the company has closed on $93.5 million in asset sales and has paid down $100.1 million of debt.

Hedging facilities fail to attract small, medium exporters in Cebu

AS the peso-dollar exchange remains volatile, many small and medium export companies have been discouraged from taking advantage of different hedging facilities offered by several banking institutions, an industry official said.

Former Cebu Furniture Industries Foundation (CFIF) president Michael Basubas said it is difficult for small and medium export companies to hedge as the foreign exchange market remains very volatile.

He said many exporters also do not have clear orders for the next few months from buyers.

Hedging is a strategy designed to minimize exposure to an unwanted business risk while still allowing the business to profit from an investment activity.

A currency hedging program refers to a side investment that is taken out specifically to reduce or cancel out the risk associated with exposure to certain currencies.

Planning Commission takes up lot-size

The controversial matter of eliminating relatively small residential lot sizes in Waterloo's future subdivisions will finally-for better or worse-get on track at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Waterloo City Hall, 100 W. Fourth St.The City Planning Commission will take up "a zone text amendment increasing lot sizes within the R-3 (moderate-density residential) zone" in addition to four other, unrelated proposals when it meets. At an October City Council meeting at which the Council voted to approve plans for Gateway Business Park, Planning Committee Chairman Alderman Jim Nagel "apologized" for zoning and subdivision matters gaining a cursory view from his committee before going before the Planning Commission and-if applicable-City Zoning Board. The fact the Planning Commission (and later this week, the Zoning Board) took up the minimum lot-size issue-on the committee's agenda for several months but never discussed-suggests Nagel is committed to reversing recent years' trend.Increasing the minimum lot size in R-3 to 10,500 square feet from 8,000 square feet was one of the most discussed points in the 2006 Comprehensive Plan approval process. The plan was adopted last year, but the lot size provision was removed, with a promise the City Council would revisit it.Proponents of smaller lot-size minimums say it protects property values, while opponents-such as builder/developer Mark L.

Lauren LaRocca: The art chakra //jess3.com/

He's the success story of the decade, for my generation anyway: Jesse Thomas, 25 years old, with what seems like a lifetime of experience.

"Everyone says I talk and act like I'm 35 -- or 45," he said.

A typical email from him goes something like this:

I was just exhibiting at Artomatic in Arlington all May..
