From banking to back care

For 13 years, Wayne Shum helped small business owners finance their dreams.

This summer, he turned his attention to his own dream, joining his wife and her longtime business partner in a venture they believe is on the cutting edge of back pain treatment.

Shum, 38, was a district manager looking after small business service with TD Canada Trust. He spent his days on the road, checking with branches and customers from London to Cambridge, Brantford to Stratford.

"I really enjoyed my job, but this was a great opportunity."

The opportunity was something his wife, Sandra Lee, had been dabbling in for a few months. She is a chiropractor, in practice with fellow chiropractor Doug Pooley in St. Thomas and Dutton.

"There's a big gap between what we consider conservative care for chronic back pain and surgery," says Lee, 38.

Red Wings Open Holiday Store

If you have a Rochester Red Wing fan on your holiday shopping list, the team has plenty of things that would go great under the tree.

The holiday sale that began the Saturday after Thanksgiving has become a Red Wing tradition.

People get a chance to pick out some merchandise in the store, or buy packages, holiday packs and coupon books.

Minnesota infielder Tommy Watkins was there to meet his fans and sign autographs.

"Only 139 days until opening day. So baseball season will be here before you know it. It's great place to come down and pick something up for the fan in your life," said Dan Mason, Red Wings general manager.

For those who missed this weekend's sale, the store is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and every Saturday up until Christmas.

Muddying the Green waters

THE ecological debate took unexpected twists yesterday with Greens leader Bob Brown attacking environmentalist Tim Flannery, and failed NSW Liberal leader Peter Debnam undermining federal Coalition policy.

Both moves affect the battle for the marginal Sydney seat of Wentworth, where Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull is under electoral pressure over his failure to ratify the Kyoto protocol and his approval of Gunns's proposed Tasmanian pulp mill.

Professor Flannery, a noted writer, scientist, campaigner on environmental issues and Australian of the Year, angered Senator Brown for publicly supporting Mr Turnbull.

In a newspaper interview, Professor Flannery said he would vote for Mr Turnbull if he had the chance and that parliament needed more people like him to tackle climate change.

Sears makes offer for Restoration Hardware

Sears Holdings Corp. is offering to buy out Restoration Hardware Inc., a home furnishings and catalog company with locations in Wauwatosa and Pleasant Prairie, at a price higher than a previously accepted offer from a private equity firm.

In a regulatory filing Monday, the operator of Sears and Kmart stores said it is prepared to offer $6.75 per share for Restoration Hardware (NASDAQ: RSTO), a Corte Madera, Calif.-based chain with more than 100 retail and outlet store locations in the United States and Canada.

The bid tops an accepted $6.70 per share offer from private equity firm Catterton Partners. However, as of Nov. 23, a special committee of Restoration Hardware's board has rejected the advances from Sears, declining to provide confidential information about Restoration to the Hoffman Estates, Ill., retailer for due diligence, according to a letter included in Monday's U.S.
